Chulalonkorn Day Celebrated in Thailand.

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Every year on 23rd October, Thais take a national holiday to commemorate the death of one of the most revered kings of the past; Chulalongkorn. Chulalongkorn was one of the most important figureheads in Thai history, and the day is taken to commemorate the day of his death.

Thailand Chulalongkorn Day History

When Chulalongkon’s father -who was on the throne at the time- died, Chulalongkon inhereted the title to the throne. He was only 15 when he took to the throne, and was thereafter known as Rama V – the fifth monarch of Siam (Thailand) to come from the house of Chakri.

During the 19th century, King Chulalongkorn brought in a lot of changes and modernisation to Thailand. He incorporated into Thailand the systems he learned from western governments. He also improved dimplomatic relations with France, Britain, Usa nd Russia. His children were also sent to the West to be educated.

The King pushed for the abolition of slavery, the construction of railways, the establishment of post and telegraph services and the creation of a ministerial system in 1892. Health and education were two other areas that he saw about improving. The King successfully adapted the country to cope with the rising threat of colonialism. Because of Chulalongkon’s significant diplomacy, Thailand was able to remain independent – despite the country ceding part of its territories to France during the final few years of his reign.

His death was a terrible blow for the nation of Thailand which had looked to the king for so many years for guidance, and who had brought about so much positive change. For this reason, his death is still commemorated to this day.
