Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Bahia Honda State Park has something quite uncommon for the Florida Keys. It’s got a beach. Plus a truely nice one too. Add to it great camping sites and you have the formula for a Florida Keys camping paradise. Let’s see why.

Though the Florida Keys are islands, natural beaches are very rare indeed. Why? Largely for the reason that the waters surrounding the Keys are so very calm, the sand does not get an opportunity to create a beach. Bahia Honda has, no doubt about it, the best beach in the Keys, and probably the best in Florida.

Swimming is a popular pastime at Bahia Honda. The calm turquoise seas are warm, in the upper seventies to the low eighties most of the year. In addition, the waters are quite clear. Although the beach looks out to the Atlantic, unless there’s a storm out in the ocean, the waters are calm.

Along with swimming, snorkeling is quite a large draw to Bahia Honda. The calm, clear waters which invite swimming are great for exploring the undersea world. And if you’d like a delight, book a snorkeling tour from Bahia Honda out to Looe Key to visit the amazing coral reef there.

Kayaking, canoeing and boating are also on the list of enjoyable things to do at the park. There is a little marina plus a ramp for boats. If you’ve somehow mislaid your boat, you can rent a kayak from the park’s concession stand. The serene waters are great for exploring the waterways around the island, especially on the Gulf side.

Don’t forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their seaside cabins, many sorts of camping are available. Here’s a caution: phone ahead to place a reservation for a camping site or particularly one of the cabins. As you may imagine, a beach cottage in paradise has a bit of a waiting list.

Bahia Honda State Park is located in the lower Florida Keys, just south and west of Seven Mile Bridge. One stay and you’ll very likely understand why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or simply Paradise.

So come on down for a visit. The weather is fine and the natives are welcoming. And once you’re here, you will have to agree that paradise is found at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.
