I had never understood why players like Roberto Baggio or Gianfranco Zola were named opulent players as they can produce a moment of wizardry to get you a goal at any time but Pizarro and Guti in my opinion can be called opulent as they are only handy if their groups are playing well.

They do not help defensively and Pizarro in particular isn’t that useful in the attacking 3rd particularly when he’s not playing well. He gives the ball away far too cheaply and against Manchester United, that could be fatal.

Roma aren’t that bad at the rear if Juan and Philip Mexes are in the starting line-up but they are not as solid as United and in attack, they might have done with options than Totti and Mirko Vucinic.

Unless Roma play without fear and that has to come from manager Luciano Spalletti, who does not always get it right tactically, because of his being too wary, and they take their chances when they come their way particularly in the initial leg then I don’t see them going through.

There is no doubt that they’re sufficiently good to beat United but they have to accept that they can do it and I don’t accept that they do because like most Italian teams away from home, they have a tendency to want to avoid defeat more than going all out to win.
