Because of Chulalongkon’s significant diplomacy, Thailand was able to remain independent – despite the country ceding part of its territories to France during the final few years of his reign.

His death was a terrible blow for the nation of Thailand which had looked to the king for so many years for guidance, and who had brought about so much positive change. For this reason, his death is still commemorated to this day.
