Precisely What A Person Should Know Concerning Road Trips With Pre-Schoolers
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010Traveling with children, especially preschoolers can make for a very noisy trip. Sometimes you don’t get very far down the road at all before you have the almost irresistible urge to turn back and forget about the trip all together.
But, weary traveling parent, relax. There is hope. A little bit of planning is all it takes to make your next road trip a more enjoyable one.
Provide entertainment - The night before the trip, ask each child to choose three to five toys or activities to bring along. Making a child part of the planning process will help them feel like they are more a part of the trip and be able to enjoy it more.
In addition to the child picked activities, mom or dad should pack a few activities as surprises. Bringing out something that they’re not expecting will break the monotony of travel. One great idea is window markers that lets the children draw on the windows and is easily washed off. Coloring books, crayons and pocket games will also help.
Toys and games from home will only entertain for a few hours so have a few interesting and fun road games up your sleeve for this eventuality. You could try counting games such as counting the number of blue cars or see who can spot the most number of out of state travelers by their license plates. Spotting specific letters, such as who can spot the letter “C” the most times may have more appeal to the older kids. For something the whole family can get in on try the round robin style of story telling. Even the driver will be able to have fun with this. One person starts the story with a sentence and passes it on. The next person has to continue the story and then pass it on.
You always know that when you’re in the middle of nowhere a child will complain that they are hungry. Everyone knows that kids who are hungry are the ones most difficult to deal with. Be prepared for middle of nowhere snack requests with fun, easy to eat snacks prepared and waiting in a cooler. Sliced apples and peanut butter, celery stuffed with cream cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches cut into fun shapes, veggie sticks, or bananas make great on-the-road snacks for preschoolers. Choose drinks with a minimal amount of sugar for the trip. With no way to burn this excess energy off your kids will likely become hyper and restless. Pouches and juice boxes are likewise a poor choice. One squeeze and the enjoyment of the rest of your trip will be jeopardized when that juice sprays all over the car.
Road trips with your preschooler can be a fun chance to learn about and with each other.
