There are many different lakes and mountains holidays in Italy as the north of Italian has hundreds of lakes and the Italian Alps. Certain spots are more popular then others as the proximity to large cities make travel very easy. Lake Garda is a popular lake holiday as it is close to Milan and Venice. This lake has many resorts and hotels with much to see and do. As with the surrounding mountains Lake Garda was created by the glaciers so the lake side views are quite dramatic.
Not to be missed at Lake Garda is the ancient fortified town of Sirmione. This town contains a great mix of the old and new as not only is there a fortified town but there are also several spa complexes and many restaurants, hotels, bars and fashion boutiques. Other historical spots include Scaliger castle, built in the 13th century and the villa of the famous Roman poet Catallus. For those looking for relaxation and rest you can visit the sulfur spring on the end of the peninsula and for some fun Gardaland is very close by.
Lake Como is another glacial lake in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. It is about 1 hour north of Milan. This lake is one of the deepest in Europe. Most villas will allow you to tour the gardens and you can make arrangements to tour some of the interiors as well.
The weather in Lake Como is very mild and even in the hottest part of summer will remain a balmy 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The lake itself offers many water sports such as windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing. You can travel to different towns around the lake by driving around the edge of the lake or by taking a ferry.
For a mountainous region you need not look any further then the Italian Alps in the north of the country.
