Montserrat: a catholic monastery | A catholic monastery in the mountain | Montserrat: a catholic monastery in the mountain
Thursday, September 9th, 2010At approximately forty five minutes from Barcelona, visiting Montserrat is a great day trip from Barcelona, and easily reached. Montserrat means the serrated mountain, and is in itself a wonder to wonder. If you take the train from Barcelona, which leaves from Placa Espanya, then you may enjoy some lovely scenery - essentially flat, till all of a sudden a massive rock form juts up from the earth - here you have Montserrat. The train stops in Olessa de Montserrat - the little city at the foot of the mountain. From here you have two techniques of transport to take you up to the mountain. First the “cremallera” or “zip train” takes you slowly up the incline - some 2400 feet. The train’s wheels are like toothed cogs that run along a toothed track - just like a zip. Nevertheless by far the most impressive strategy of transport is the cable vehicle. Amazing perspectives can be enjoyed from the cabin, including the breezy roads that licks it’s way up the mount, with coaches and vehicles admiring the scenery. This is a handy place to do Turismo Barcelona
At the very top is a catholic monastery - built in 1025 - and the main attraction. There’s the beautiful cathedral with the famous Black Madonna - discovered in a close-by cavern. If you are lucky or plan in advance, then you may enjoy the choir singing their haunting tunes within the cathedral. There are several walks along the breadth of the mountain-top - the Angel walk, the Santa Cova ( or sacred cavern, where the Black Madonna was discovered ), and all are easily accessed and enjoyed at leisure. The monks also have installations like a self serviced restaurant, gift shop and museum and are extraordinarily accommodating, although it’s worth remembering that Catalan is their main language.
Montserrat’s history is completely full of interesting stories and yarns - various fires have raged and destroyed lots of the chapels and installations and fascinating footage can be seen of the numerous catastrophes. There’s also a funicular train ( like a bus on a cable ) to take you to the peak where you can truly wonder at the surroundings. As discussed, the majority of the encompassing area is flat, so the scope for views and some amazing pictures are unlimited. This place is near the terminales aeropuerto barcelona from where you can get simple
